Written before the standard.

Field notes from the journal that preceded this manual. They are kept because they are where the thinking started, not because they meet the bar an observation has to clear. Nothing here has earned a principle.

Why they stay

An observation has to hold a pattern until one sentence survives it, and a principle has to be earned by a published observation. These notes predate both rules. Promoting them would make the rules optional, and deleting them would hide the working.

So they sit here, findable, labelled for what they are. Some of the ideas in them have since been argued properly and appear in Observations. Most have not.

Pressure Changes People. So Can Recovery. Prolonged pressure does not leave people where it found them. Understanding this is the first step to designing a way through it. Recovery Resilience Is Not Noise The loudest person in the room is not the most resilient. Resilience is quiet, structural, and almost invisible until you need it. Identity Pause. Adapt. Continue. A breakpoint is not an error. It is the moment the system becomes readable. The same is true for people. Resilience The Cost of Running Hot Sustained high load is not a badge of honour. It is a system operating outside its design parameters. Eventually, something gives. Pressure Signal / Noise Knowing the difference between what matters and what is just loud is a skill. In cyber work, it is a survival skill. Systems Identity Beyond the Role When what you do becomes who you are, the role is not just work anymore. It is carrying weight it was never designed to hold. Identity Quiet Leavers The bill for sustained operational pressure rarely arrives during the incident. It arrives three months later, in a resignation letter from the person who held the line. Recovery What The Middle Carries The org chart shows who reports to whom. It does not show who carries what. The middle holds the difference between the layers, and nowhere is that written down. Several of these notes deal with pressure, burnout and identity loss. If you are in it rather than reading about it, the operator recovery guide is written for the people who held the line, and it is not a metaphor. Talking to someone is not a weaker option than reading.
